Hawkins’ work recognises the similarities and differences between the wild and our own existence, and uses the imagery of wild beasts to explore aspects of human nature (both as historical thought, and in the context of modern society). Her paintings focus on elements of the sublime and the grotesque, involving the viewer both as witness and participant. Working across a variety of scales she develops relationships between her audience and subjects, creating an intimacy between the observer and the observed.
